Birding at a Historic Sporting Estate

10,000 Birds

I didn’t expect to see any birds. During cold winters, the hunters retreated to the south, intent on quail and other game species. Red-headed Woodpeckers chattered to each other as they flew from tree to tree, and I marveled at just how many I spotted.

Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan

10,000 Birds

The main attraction for birders here are the hornbills – I have written about them before , so this post will be more on the other birds I saw there in 2017. Anyway, it is a very cute-looking bird if you are big enough not to be among its prey of (mostly) insects. I have written about the hornbills of this area before.

Lewis's Woodpecker in New York State

10,000 Birds

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. In fact, the bird is the fifth recorded in the history of the state,* and the first spotted in the Empire State since 2001. Third of all, the bird that was first seen on 30 October is, as of this blog posting, STILL THERE!

10,000 Birds

So, without further ado, let’s get to my remaining birds! But the Golden-cheeked Woodpecker (in this case, a female) is a strictly Hot Country species, replaced by the closely-related Golden-fronted Woodpecker up where we live. But they are such handsome birds that I can’t resist showing them off.

Birding Fuzhou National Forest Park

10,000 Birds

As you have probably realized by now, in my posts on 10,000 Birds, I generally scrupulously avoid giving any practical hints for birding at the specified location. However, if you mostly just want to see photos of birds such as this Black-throated Bushtit , you might as well stay here. Or at least like birds.

The Kerkini Lake, Greece: Dipped One, Got One

10,000 Birds

I dipped a bird recently – possibly a lifer. While crossing Gramos Mountain in northern Greece, a Dendrocopos woodpecker flew over the road and landed in a pine tree. I had two possibilities, an uncommon Middle Spotted or scarce White-backed Woodpecker – which would have been a lifer for me. I am not complaining.

Forest Bathing

10,000 Birds

Having been penned in our house for the last month (and more), the last time we have been out birding seems like a distant memory. I was ardently working to finish a years-long project on the birds of T&T so those last few weeks have not been bird-less by any means. A tree that is loved by birds is also loved by the birder.
