Countless flocks of frigid, sodden birds must be wondering whether they took a wrong turn somewhere. In between ice storms, I visited Brighton’s Brickyard Trail, a nice little walk that can be excellent for sparrows. What do you know, I spotted my FOY Swamp Sparrow in song, along with about a hundred Song Sparrows , also in song.

The fact that this hour falls in the middle of the night means that most people sleep right through it, but I wonder what would happen if you observes a nocturnal bird like an owl during the hour that gets reset. I found myself in a beautiful part of New York that was so remote that birds apparently couldn’t find it.

This is the lesson I learned at the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival back in January when a young birder, Noah Kuck, let me know that he really wanted to see a Carolina Wren. Twitching is a British term used to mean “the pursuit of a previously located rare bird.” Basically, I never had the time to chase birds. My second twitch, during the winter of 2011, was also in the area of McArthur where an American Tree Sparrow ( Spizella arborea ) was spotted during a Christmas Bird Count.

And, sure enough, as the sun set birds came over in ones and twos and fours and fives, adding to what was already a pretty darn big flock of birds spread out on the West Pond. Mostly the ducks were Red-breasted Merganser and Greater Scaup , the two most prevalent species on the pond, but there were a few other birds mixed in as well.

Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. I had my first swim with Inshore Bottlenose Dolphins in Northland’s Bay of Islands back in 2000, and it was a tripy experience. Which has always mystified me slightly.

I chalked up 132 species in a pretty relaxed eight days, during which birds shared the agenda with culture. This area offers probably the best wetland birding near Belgrade. Most years, a day in January of serious birding around Lake Cuitzeo can give me around 85 species. So up north I go, always hoping for a good harvest of year birds. This past January, however, my experience was even better. As a result, we managed to see an even 100 bird species in one day — a record for both of us.
