Whilst leading a birding tour to Sri Lanka, I spotted a flash of bright white in a lily-choked wetland near Ambalantota in the south-east of this verdant island. Whilst we are on the subject of jacanas and their mating behavior, it is worth noting that this family of birds (as well as phalaropes and painted-snipes) is polyandrous.

We have continued to monitor the nest sites and the pairs of Pied Oystercatchers over the past few months and the birds are really having a tough year this year. In fact they have not just laid once again, but many pairs have laid up to five clutches of eggs this season. Normal size and under-sized Pied Oystercatcher eggs.

Over the past few months there have been a lot of birds breeding around Broome with the excellent rain events that we have been having and the vegetation is at long last revived. Among birds the Egyptian Vulture uses rocks to crack Ostrich eggs, the New Caledonian Crow and Woodpecker Finch (one of several Darwin Finches of the Galapagos Islands), uses sticks to extract grubs from inside a branch. This is similar to the fact that all birds, even first time breeders within a species build identical nests.

The first time I visited the 30 acre enclosure, I walked the raised boardwalk over the space with eyes wide. Multiple varieties of ungulates jogged from place to place, while giant rhea birds stalked around looking for food. The Canada Geese (on the right side) show no fear. The Canada Goose sits on its nest of pine cones.

After a very good Wet Season with substantially more rain than normal over the first few months of 2017 the land was flooded and a huge variety of birds arrived in the Broome area to take advantage of the ideal conditions for breeding. While walking along the beach one morning, I noted a fruiting Dagger Cactus right near the beach, at the top was a bird just destroying one of the purple fruits near the top of plant’s formidable crown. After 28 days of sharing the duty of sitting on three eggs we finally had the arrival of our first Pied Oystercatcher chicks for 2012 on Friday August 3rd. It is unusual for three eggs to be laid here in Broome and many eggs do not even hatch due to predation each season.

Mating systems and parental care patterns can be odd among birds. Male-female role reversal, happens in some familiar birds, but is rare. Male Phalaropes, Jacanas, Tinamous, and Rheas build nests, incubate the eggs and take care of the chicks. Females then begin to lay eggs in the nest the male prepared.

Over the years that we have been observing Pied Oystercatchers along the coast near Broome we have noticed that it is the male bird that always appears to construct the nest site. One of our male Pied Oystercatchers has been marked with an engraved leg flag “A1” and was one of the first pairs to lay eggs this season.

Several bird species arrived in Broome early in the year and have bred successfully and this has included Plumed Whistling-Ducks , Wandering Whistling-Ducks , Magpie Geese , Australian Painted Snipe , Australian Crakes , Black-winged Stilt , Red-kneed Dotterels, Purple Swamphens and Masked Lapwings. According to a local African superstition that I just made up, it is not harmful to eat toxically colored birds if you eat them in the dark. Colonial history reflected in bird names. Unfortunately, the Fork-tailed Drongo is not the honest and god-fearing bird one could wish for. She also laid eggs in Melba Finch nests.

I did not find much about this bird online except for a paper with the exciting title “A new quill mite Torotrogla emberizae sp. In contrast, the females need to make sure not to get duped into raising actual cuckoos – the buntings are a targeted host species ( source ). Better safe than sorry.
