The shallows are full of ducks in eclipse, a real puzzle that requires a bit of time and a sharp eye – something you usually reserve for warblers and such. Wigeons are only migrants and not a breeding species in Serbia and August is a bit too early for any longer distance duck movements. The autumn migration has clearly started.

Redgannet, the blog, has taken a back seat while 10,000 Birds does most of the driving and Mrs Gannet does the navigating, so it has slightly lost its way over the last year or so. Thus it is easy to organise yourself and visit a few sites to catch your target birds. In winter a few ducks are likely.

Here, scores of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks landed in the waving reeds, only their heads and bright pink bills visible as we slowly moseyed past. I could paddle on the water trail because I not only owned a kayak, but also because I owned a car that could get me to the park – far away from public transportation.

ARUBA — Of all the places that I’ve had the privilege to bird, Aruba is probably has the poorest birding coverage. None of the things that really lend themselves to high bird diversity. It’s a good bird, but there are a small handful of other records. For starters, it’s small. And really windy.

You can easily get there via public transport by taking the train to Lara from either Geelong or Melbourne if you do not have access to a vehicle. I would advise allowing as much time as possible if you hope to walk all of the trails and to be able to explore the different environments and the many species of birds.

Anyone with more than a couple of hours to kill could easily make a quick birding foray out from the airport. Taxi v SMRT – The SMRT is the excellent, clean, safe, reliable, cheap transport system of Singapore. My personal list for Paser Ris runs to 75 birds over 15 visits that average out at around 25 species per outing.

Last year, I compiled a subjective list of the Top 25 National Wildlife Refuges for Birding. In many ways, Hagerman NWR is similar to other well-known birding refuges. In particular, most birding occurs within view of an oil well. In some instances, the birding is incongruously right next to oil rigs or pads.

Of course you don’t really care if you are a duck! Herdsman Lake is easily reached by public transport form the city centre and it is best to allow about 4 hours to do a complete lap for birding. We saw over 50 species of birds during the afternoon and despite all the warnings we did not see any snakes!

The weather in Karratha was very hot during our visit with daytime temperatures of 38c (100f) and the predominant birds in the township were Little Corella , Crested Pigeons and Silver Gulls. Karratha is a town built on industry and first impressions do not give you particularly high hopes for any good birding areas.

Once again we referred to the Wildwalks website for another option that included using public transport, with a train being our preference. On arrival at the train station at East Hills you are soon on the water’s edge of the Georges River and there are plenty of birds in the surrounding bush as well as on the water.

Herdsman Lake is very good if you only have access to public transport and will offer great birds like Blue-billed Ducks and Musk Ducks , but if you have a vehicle you should try and visit the Perth Hills National Parks and also Yanchep National Park.
