This actually benefits our local wildlife, because the rainwater then gets trapped in the borrow pit and in some instances it will sustain the wildlife right through our dry months when there is no rainfall at all. This particular borrow pit is right beside the highway around seventy kilometres from Broome and is always worth stopping at.

There is a lot of bird movement around Australia at the moment due to the weather, so time to go and investigate! Last weekend we drove just out of town to where the road has been flooded and observed thousands of birds that have taken advantage of the very wet “Wet&# that we have experienced and bred like crazy.

The auto tour at Colusa NWR also boasts several other pretty special birds, like this White-faced Ibis ( Plegadis chihi ) … and a Black-crowned Night-Heron ( Nycticorax nycticorax ) roost. Yet, beside a few Little and one Great Egret , a raft of Eurasian Coots , no birds. It is getting a bit hot.

It didn’t take too long after the big rain event at the end of January for Roebuck Plains to flood and the birds to arrive. The highway out of Broome towards Derby has also become great for bird-watching. Sadly, one of the first birds that we saw was a recently deceased Barn Owl. Loess bluff with numerous bee-eaters and one Northern Wheatear and, cut into a low grassy ridge, the set of tracks veers right. Further on a wire sits a somewhat large-headed small-crow like bird. I am coming closer – the bird is quite tolerant – and taking a few photos. Their scientific name is not turtur for nothing.

The very best wetland birding around Belgrade, Serbia, is not to be found in the locally famous and tourist-promoted Obedska or Carska Bara Ramsar areas, but at Beljarica Backwaters and the fish farm triangle of Centa, Baranda and Sakule villages, in the Tamis River floodplain.

The water is right to the edge of the highway in some areas as you across the plains. The cattle are clever enough to move across the property and get away from the deep water. Even the Pacific Black Ducks have decided they need to stand on the gate to get out of the water when they have had enough! Glossy Ibis on the move.

When you travel north along the highway from Broome towards Willare and Derby you come to a wide bridge with a sign that says “Cockatoo Creek” I would highly recommend that you pull up on the right after you have crossed the bridge and park where the plaque is for the official opening of it. The average annual rainfall for Broome is around 500mm and we receive that rainfall over a few months in the summer, which is right now. A local cattle station out of town received 652mm in the same 24 hour period, so we got off lightly! Of course all of the muddy water is already full of tadpoles and therefore the birds are moving in.

Each of the dark marks in this photo from August, 2018 was a duck. But such a shallow water depth doesn’t work for our many duck species, and these, along with most gulls, terns, grebes, and larger shorebirds, were nowhere to be seen after the first two weeks of January. People still head to Halls Creek in search of gold and it is possible to obtain a Miner’s Right to do just that for $25. Our reasons for always stopping in Halls Creek are of course to go birding!

This will change over time of course and once it rains again you would need to consider if you had the right vehicle to access the area. Its crown was so thick, I could spot the movement, but only rarely the bird itself and never the whole bird, once it would be only its back, once its head, once just legs… slowly, I was putting this puzzle together. The first birds to spot from the boat were Common Terns furiously defending their newly built nests on floating logs.

On my recent short family vacation to Miami, I was granted a single day to get out and really bird like a madman. The reason the location is remaining undisclosed is that reliable Mangrove Cuckoos are difficult to find in the American Birding Association area and are a very sought after species. There is very little traffic about at this time of year, but there are a lot of cattle wandering across the road and you need to be alert. We were able to add a few new birds to the 2019 Year List and had a good day out. The actual Poo Ponds themselves were busy with birds and we even observed a pair of Black-tailed Native-hens.

It was very damp along the edges of the road and there were two male Superb Lyrebirds busy kicking through the leaves right on the edge of the road. As we came through the open fields towards the coast there were numerous Cattle Egrets among the cattle and Straw-necked Ibis.

Palmerston lies to the south east and Darwin to the north west and there is a bicycle path almost right to the reserve. The bicycle path takes you through the bush offering a variety of bird-life along the route and then I cross over at McMillans Road and enter the lagoon system at Fiddlers Lane. Magpie Geese.
