I hope everyone participated in at least one day of the four day Great Backyard Bird Count of 2018. As I walked out on my back porch on Friday morning, the first day of the count, it was a cool, clear day and the birds were very active at the feeders. I submitted five checklists from four different locations yielding 44 species.

On New Year’s Day 2016, our last day in California before heading back to New York, I was pleased for the chance to get out for a few hours in the morning to jump start the year list. Greater White-fronted Goose is a decent bird for Orange County but it lacks the panache of a Vermilion Flycatcher. The things are everywhere!

Certainly what I would consider to be an under birded area, eBird.com lists 232 species on 397 total check lists. On my last couple of visits, California Gulls, Ring-billed Gulls, Ruddy Ducks, Common Gallinule, Western Grebe, Eared Grebe and Pied-billed Grebes were on the water. One raft along had over 380 birds in it.

The Golden Eagle is not only the National Bird of Mexico, but considered very threatened. There was some big news here last year when it was confirmed that a nesting pair in the Sierra De La Laguna Biosphere had fledged two birds. These lovely little birds hung around just long enough for me to get a couple of nice images.

There is very little fresh water, at least to be found year round, but the bird populations all seem to do just fine. In some short hikes around the area, Black-throated Sparrows, California Quail, Harris Hawks, Gila Woodpeckers , and Greater Roadrunners were quite abundant. There were several Phainopeplas as well.

The temperatures in northern California have been in the high 90’s to 104 degrees so having the only water hole in half a mile probably helps attract birds to my water feature. It was obviously not a woodpecker. Then, the very next day, this indistinguishable bird flies down from the trees. And enjoying it!
