Most of the usual birds seem present, a frog or two call from a small wetland, and a few other expected animals are there too. We would marvel over cheery flocks of green and bright yellow Carolina Parakeets and then we would see them decline until there were just two, maybe one lonely bird, and then we would witness their forever absence.

This past weekend I was disconnected from the internet, stuck in the woods without electricity, reduced to sleeping in a shelter made of fabric, and cooked meals over an open fire. And one that I have written about before when I was pleased to find Blackburnian Warblers like the one above breeding.).

It also is home to the breeding sites of vulnerable seabirds including the Cook’s Petrel and Black Petrel, both species are considered vulnerable. There are few families of birds as bewitching as the birds-of-paradise. They are feathered jewels with extraordinary breeding dances almost unrivalled in the bird world. Both those birds were females, which are brown on top with buff and pale undersides, but they are still elegant birds and bigger than I imagined.

As I said last week , I’ve decided to try and knock off a few of the New Zealand endemics and specialities that I haven’t seen before over the coming year, and the first place that sprung to mind was pretty close, just across the Cook Strait in the Marlborough Sounds. This trip was to rectify that.

And while that works too, I’ve always preferred the Canadian version, if only because the bulk of the White-throated Sparrow’s breeding range lies north of the border.
