Like many birders, ever since I was a child, these wonderful, shy birds have been known as the Common Moorhen. Now, here in Colorado this is the season for the high-country birds. The grasslands have been popping off with breeders for well over a month, but the snow is just now giving way to lush alpine meadows and rocky tundras. Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. They are often found roosting in small groups along the edges of lakes and riverine sandbars. It is also related to Wood Stork of the Americas and Milky Stork of Asia.

In retrospect, this weekend at Wuyuan was not exactly my finest hour as a bird photographer – hopefully, I could do better now, and perhaps one day I will, should normal traveling ever be possible again in China. I’d rather see yellow birds than yellow plants. Such a cute bird deserves a better representation.

The consultant also suggested increasing readership by catering to highly specific niche interest groups. Well, they mainly feed on birds, which may explain their low popularity. The male is easily recognized by the characteristic white throat spot that gave the bird its name. I don’t think I will stoop that low.

Common Moorhens are, like most birds, monogamous breeders, and may bond for a number of years in the same territory. They may breed as a group, but monogamy is the general rule. And I’ve always assumed that the Dusky Moorhen, found in Sulawesi, New Guinea and Australia was basically more of the same, but I was wrong!

It goes without saying that our three breeding species of mergansers in the United States are amongst the most brilliantly colored birds we have. Common , Hooded and Red-breasted Mergansers all breed here, but Red-breasted is the more northerly of the group. This is where they are truly effective and amazing hunters.
