In the most of Europe, Brown Bear is a mythical creature that lives only in mediaeval tapestries and folk tales. In the European Union there are only 10,000 mature bears (source: IUCN). Not much further, on the new tarmac that ends 6 km before the Gramos village, we find muddy bear footprints crossing the road.

They are quite fast and can hide in places predators can't reach like Holes, pieces of debris etc. Horses have a good chance. The main strategy for horses is organisation. So they can look out for each other.

Best Bird of the Weekend (Fourth of September 2015)

I would lay odds that we birders geek out to all manner of natural phenomena at a higher rate than almost any other group. The birding wasn’t very exciting but the hike was nice and allowed a nice view of Bear Mountain, the Bear Mountain Bridge, and the Hudson River. Did you see the supermoon eclipse last night?

On the Edge.

The tracks of two young Polar Bear skirt a crack in the sea ice in Admiralty Inlet. Wildlife concentrates at the Floe Edge, and although we just missed Narwhal as pack ice moved in just after we arrived, the place was littered with Polar Bear. Still, with that many bear you have to stay vigilant. Ringed Seal.

Birding that starts with the largest eagle of the continent certainly bears promises… The next stop is the town park in Opovo, north of Belgrade, where local bird expert Ceda Vuckovic reported one, locally rare, Short-eared Owl. I observe them, but feel I still lack experience to tell with certainty the SEO from LEO in flight.
