The first stop of the morning: young White–tailed Eagle , right next to the road and several dozen Rooks around. I observed this species in the Little Rann of Kutch in India and since then, have been burning with desire to see them back home.

Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. The Crested Serpent Eagle is another species bound to suffer from a naming error in perpetuity. One road simply ends here, giving the place a real end-of-the-world feeling. The White-cheeked Partridge is classified as Near Threatened.

Back to the Mikri Prespa , where mostly Dalmatian, with two White Pelicans among them, were circling, while one Short-toed Snake Eagle glided across. The roadside bush held one Willow Warbler , while the nearby sandpit was adorned by Northern Wheatear. Dalmatian and White Pelicans (White = the black ones). Maps and guides.

There’s a Sloth Bear in tall, dry grass, barely 50 metres from us, but all we can see is a dark, shape-shifting shadow that eventually becomes all but invisible. At the far end of the lake stands a tall, dry tree with an eagle that we are struggling to determine and it remains a dark silhouette far too far. The Telia Lake.

This ‘road’ is dirt and gravel, bisects the cove right through this open valley, and is quite narrow. Chances are quite good to see Eastern Bluebirds along the fences; Red-tailed , Red-shouldered , Broad-winged , and Cooper’s Hawks in the air: Bald and Golden Eagles (in the fall); and Northern Harriers (in winter). Tropical Cyclone Anika became a rain bearing depression over the past week. Sooty Oystercatchers , Pied Oystercatcher and a Whimbrel on the right. I did manage to get a few Surf Scoters, my first Bald Eagle of the year, Pelagic Cormorants , and an unlikely pair of Western Grebes out in the middle of that rough water.
