In the most of Europe, Brown Bear is a mythical creature that lives only in mediaeval tapestries and folk tales. In the European Union there are only 10,000 mature bears (source: IUCN). Not much further, on the new tarmac that ends 6 km before the Gramos village, we find muddy bear footprints crossing the road.

As we enter the second century of protecting, preserving, and respecting our wild spaces, certainly no one would actually consider undoing, reversing, and exploiting our national parks, forests, and monuments. Golden Eagle. After all, removing resources is the exact opposite of protecting resources. And yet, it has begun.

The first stop of the morning: young White–tailed Eagle , right next to the road and several dozen Rooks around. The world record holder is the town of Kikinda, further north, with 700 birds in their town square which has recently become an officially protected owl habitat – a small, urban nature reserve.

Beside birds, in this park you stand a chance of spotting the Eurasian Lynx , Brown Bear and Gray Wolf ! Even among the protected areas of Serbia, the Iron Gates National Park (in Serbian: Djerdap) stands out as better preserved. Well, do you really? So, yes – it is possible, but by no means easy.

Back to the Mikri Prespa , where mostly Dalmatian, with two White Pelicans among them, were circling, while one Short-toed Snake Eagle glided across. The roadside bush held one Willow Warbler , while the nearby sandpit was adorned by Northern Wheatear. Dalmatian and White Pelicans (White = the black ones). Maps and guides.

Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. The Crested Serpent Eagle is another species bound to suffer from a naming error in perpetuity. One road simply ends here, giving the place a real end-of-the-world feeling. The White-cheeked Partridge is classified as Near Threatened. A worrying trend.
