My attention was drawn upward by the elegant flying-knife form of an Osprey bearing a large fish. Harassed by the Ravens, it landed on a snag halfway up the cliff and hunched over its prize protectively. If the Osprey made the Ravens look big, the Eagle shrunk them down by comparison.

Back to the Mikri Prespa , where mostly Dalmatian, with two White Pelicans among them, were circling, while one Short-toed Snake Eagle glided across. Dalmatian and White Pelicans (White = the black ones). Barn Swallows by the reedbeds, with at least one Red-rumped Swallow and a few more Crag Martins among them. Maps and guides.

The WBW remained elusive like a bear (for me at least – a month ago, Georgos met a mother with two cubs, took a few photos, then dropped down and played dead). By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air! The Greater Spotted Eagle is a threatened species.

There are a few special wave-cut platforms that prove to be wonderful habitat for such species as Eastern Reef Egret, Silver Gull, Crested Tern, Sooty Oystercatcher [below], Pied Cormorant while above sail raptors such as Osprey, White bellied Sea-eagle, Brahminy and Whistling Kites. No adults were seen – only young birds.

Though the coast of British Columbia, a part of the Great Bear Rainforest, was rich in both, it was appallingly deficient in scientific data. She’s described conservation successes in detail–the Bald Eagle, the Short-tailed Albatross, now protected in Japan. And, this was badly needed.

Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears. This was not a very successful prank, especially since we had just encountered a large cinnamon-colored black bear which was much more interesting, even to a birder.
