While tracking brown bears in Greece some time ago, B. stood in a heraldic bear pose, on his hind legs, clawing the air and rrrroaring in his best Bearish. With hand signs, the Greek villager showed one large and two small bears nearby, that much I understood. After a drink, they went to see the bears.

Rehabbers have to grin and bear it during baby season; we raise incredibly cute wild birds behind masks, give them no human attention, and make sure they bond with each other and not us. There’s a Sloth Bear in tall, dry grass, barely 50 metres from us, but all we can see is a dark, shape-shifting shadow that eventually becomes all but invisible. The Bald Eagles that nest along the river had apparently had a very poor breeding season, the high water making their usual fishing spots less productive, so the ornithologist told me; we only saw one of the adults. The WBW remained elusive like a bear (for me at least – a month ago, Georgos met a mother with two cubs, took a few photos, then dropped down and played dead). By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air! The Greater Spotted Eagle is a threatened species.
