Birding Sukau, Sabah, Borneo

10,000 Birds

Sukau birding essentially means staying in a more-or-less comfortable lodge on the banks of the Kinatabagan river, and taking boat tours on more-or-less rickety boats on the river. This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Different perspectives.

Queens County Bird Club Seventh Annual Big Sit

10,000 Birds

This past Saturday, 10 October, was my favorite birding event of the year. Yes, it was the Queens County Bird Club Big Sit, our seventh iteration of the sedentary birding classic. It is a birding challenge where a team of birders stays in one spot for the entire day to see how many species they can record for their location.

Isolation, a.k.a. Business as Usual

10,000 Birds

I racked up a staggering number of life birds in the surprisingly rich surroundings during my four-odd years slaving for The Man.

Honestly, How Much Could It Rain?

10,000 Birds

I had set aside the morning of Sunday, June 10th to cross the San Francisco Peninsula to the Pacific Ocean town of Half Moon Bay, a mere 25 minute drive away, for a few hours of birding. Not only was I very, very wet, so were the birds that I saw. I’m fond of photos of birds in a visible mist or drizzle. I was wrong.
