Most of these are migratory species, for which Lake Cuitzeo is a vital wintering ground. I was particularly excited to see two local species that require deeper water: Ruddy Ducks and Clark’s Grebes. I took so many photos on this outing that my battery ran out of charge before I finally saw the Grebes , so no photos of those.).

At five-forty-five Sunday morning I started the eBird checklist while perched atop the Battery Harris Platform at Fort Tilden. It was the sixth year in a row of the Queens County Bird Club Big Sit, my favorite event of the year. Eventually, an Eastern Towhee che-winked and I had my first species for the day.

That spot is Battery Harris Platform at Fort Tilden, a hawk watch platform built on top of the remnants of an old artillery battery that helped protect New York Harbor back when Fort Tilden was actually still a military base. You stay in one spot and see how many species of bird you can find from that one spot.

I also watched, but failed to get pictures of, the same young bird being fed by two different male House Sparrows. These particular birds were in Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan, but the same story is taking place all over the world right now, as few species have successfully adapted to as many locations as the House Sparrow.

Fort Tilden was totally closed and the cop standing guard at the road to Breezy Point looked at me like I was crazy when I asked if there was any chance someone who wanted to watch birds could get to the barrier beaches anywhere west of Fort Tilden. Also, we saw a Blue Grosbeak , some Fox Sparrows , and both species of kinglets.

Out east on Long Island you can find what is arguably the most productive inlet in coastal New York in terms of birding.* The jetty-lined Shinnecock Inlet seems to be a magnet for marvelous birds which makes it, of course, a magnet for birders as well. The 2015 Queens County Bird Club Big Sit at Fort Tilden on Saturday was a rousing success! In addition to having more participants, we had more bird species, 76, beating out last year’s inaugural effort by two whole species. The hawk flight was not large but we did see quite a few species of raptors.

It would be difficult to identify by its Latin species name only though – albogularis means white-throated, which does not really strike me as this species’ main characteristic. Also, isn’t exactly the part of the bird that I would think of as the throat black rather than white?
