We both immediately raised our binoculars to our eyes and realised it was a Crimson Chat actively feeding along the fence and nipping in and out as it fed. We have observed White-fronted Chats as well this year in the south of Western Australia, but were unable to photograph them as they hopped around the salt-bush.

There had been a grader along the fence-line many years ago leaving a lower area that was very flooded and the raised dirt it had left behind was the perfect location for a pair of nesting Australian Painted Snipe. They have only once successfully raise a chick on Cable Beach in the territory they have chosen and that was incredible to follow the fast progress of a small feathery bundle to a flying juvenile. They don’t usually maintain their territory outside of breeding season and they have never successfully raised a chick yet.

The raising of these young chicks is not over yet! Yesterday morning both chicks were out of the nest and the parents were busy feeding them close to the nest. The male Mistletoebird called out as we approached and the chicks continued to call out for more food. They can fly short distances, but then again they only have short tails!

I had the beach to myself as is often the case and raised my binoculars to observe a lone Little Curlew at the back of the flock of shorebirds. Having checked the various ovals I was back down on Cable Beach having one of our regular walks. There was a huge flock of shorebirds roosting on high tide on 16th September around midday.

Whilst observing the Southern Emu-wrens a White-fronted Chat flew into view and landed on some raised vegetation! It was a beautiful male bird and we then realised there were female birds on the other side of the wide trail that he was communicating with. Two new birds for 2019 just like that!

Last year they successfully laid three eggs and they successfully raised three chicks , which is the only record that we are aware of in the local area. The last time they successfully raised a chick was in 2012.

The pair of Pied Oystercatchers have been successful in raising a chick on two occasions that we are aware of in recent years and that was in 2008 and 2011. In fact they were the only pair to successfully raise a chick in the 2008 season and only one other chick survived in 2011.

Most birders know better than to fall prey to such sensationalism, but among the public at large, Australia is notorious for being a land creeping and crawling with dangerous and even lethal wildlife at every turn. The quacker in question was named Ripper, a drake Musk Duck raised at the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve near Canberra.
