Over the past few months there have been a lot of birds breeding around Broome with the excellent rain events that we have been having and the vegetation is at long last revived. This is not surprising at all due to the fact that we have monitored the Pied Oystercatcher breeding success (or lack thereof ) since 2000 along a twenty three kilometre stretch of beach and it is very rare for any of the sixteen pairs to succeed. This pair of Pied Oystercatchers has been successful on one occasion and that was in 2012.

Of the sixteen pairs of Pied Oystercatchers between Gantheaume Point and Willie Creek on the south side, which is a length of breeding territories covering 23 kilometres-just over 14 miles-only one chick fledges most years. This year one pair of Pied Oystercatchers has once again proven to be able to raise young.

I soon found the pair of Pied Oystercatchers that I was looking for and they had two failed attempts at breeding this year. They have only once successfully raise a chick on Cable Beach in the territory they have chosen and that was incredible to follow the fast progress of a small feathery bundle to a flying juvenile. It returns to Broome with a mottled breeding plumage pattern and gradually changes its moult during its stay. This past breeding season the pair that inhabit this area of reef successfully raised three young birds and the last chick finally left its parents at the end of 2014 and they now have the area to themselves once again.

I had the beach to myself as is often the case and raised my binoculars to observe a lone Little Curlew at the back of the flock of shorebirds. One of the Curlew Sandpipers still has quite a lot of breeding plumage across its breast feathers. There was a huge flock of shorebirds roosting on high tide on 16th September around midday.

Since discovering our first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in July 2000 we have observed the breeding of these local shorebirds along the coast between Gantheaume Point in the south and Willie Creek in the north, which is a distance of 23 kilometres. The last time they successfully raised a chick was in 2012.

It is at the same time of year that the migratory shorebirds that spend part of each year in Broome are also breeding, but in the Arctic. They had nested closer to the reef in earlier years, but the construction of a beach shelter just prior to the breeding season one year changed their decision on a suitable nest site.

We are into the second attempt at breeding for this season in Broome for Pied Oystercatchers. She successfully raised a chick in 2007, which has been living in a large flock to the south of Broome. We had one pair attempt 5 times in 2009, so they don’t give up easily!

The most common member of the Grebe species around Broome is the Australasian Grebe- Tachybaptus novaehollandiae and it has taken advantage of our exceptionally good Wet Season early this year and has been breeding very successfully. During breeding season the Australasian Grebe has a very distinct pale yellow patch at the base of the bill.

It is not unusual to find a group of trial nest scrapes in a breeding territory and then the female lays the eggs in the nest that she prefers. Our first stop was Cable Beach to find the Pied Oystercatchers in their territory even though the breeding season is over. I heard some sounds coming from a mangrove bush and we discovered a Horsfield’s Bronze-Cuckoo that appeared to have been raised by a protective Dusky Gerygone.

I have written about the interesting sex life of these jacanas a few times already (short version: female mates with male, lays a bunch of eggs for him to incubate and raise the chicks, leaves him, finds another male, repeat). The Little Grebe is of course a very common bird that can still surprise by its beauty in its breeding plumage.
