Birding across the north of Australia in July

In Australia it is winter in July, but the weather is as perfect as you could hope for in the north of the country with daytime temperatures around 30c/86f and the night-time temperatures being around 20c/68f and rarely a cloud in the sky. It was an incredible time on the road and one which I will expand on over coming weeks.

You can easily get there via public transport by taking the train to Lara from either Geelong or Melbourne if you do not have access to a vehicle. I would advise allowing as much time as possible if you hope to walk all of the trails and to be able to explore the different environments and the many species of birds.

Duncan Road birding

Before we left home to go camping and birding in the northern area of the Kimberley we had a plan that once we got as far north as the Northern Territory we would return to Halls Creek, Western Australia, via the Duncan Road. The waterbody was not huge, but it contained freshwater crocodiles and a variety of bird-life in the area.

De Grey River rest area

The De Grey River rest area is a good place to take a break if you are travelling the long journey between the two towns of Broome and Port Hedland in Western Australia. We usually keep a list of the birds that we see along the way to break the boredom! The birds were the birds that we always observe there.
