I came across this strange article about German research on which slaughter method creates more pain for the animal: the Western method of stunning or the Islamic method of a cut to the neck. It is also used to prevent the animal from feeling pain before it dies. According to the researchers, the Islamic method wins.

Bea sent me a link to an article in Gourmet called " Humane Slaughterhouses ," by Rebecca Marx, that is absurd. They believe you can take a life that doesn't want to be taken in a humane way, and I don't agree. The animal is an "it," but I wouldn't expect anything more in this type of article. It’s how we treat humans, too.

What do you do when you – a citizen whose rights are protected by the U.S. This is what we need for birds, whose rights as government-protected species are violated every day by free-roaming cats. They would be made up of people who are sick and tired of government-protected species being slaughtered by domestic cats.

The “Crow Down” is a “hunting contest” where both adults and children slaughter as many crows as they possibly can in two days. Some people think it’s just plain fun to kill enormous numbers of animals and pile up their bodies, and when there’s no “bag limit” it’s legal to do so. Why do they do this?

I've used the term "animal activism" lately as an experiment. I notice that if I use "animal rights activist" or anything with the word "rights" in it, because it's loaded and misunderstood, my listener often has an immediate bias of some kind. First, note that now PeTA is an "animal advocacy group."

Twice in the past 24 hours (once here and once on Stephanie's blog, in the comments )I have come across the following statement: "[insert animal here] are safe from predators, get fed regularly, and are better off on farms than if they were in 'the wild.'" But the message remains the same, and it's the only such message available in film to my knowledge (and please let me know of any others): there's simply no way to kindly, politely, "humanely" take someone's life when you don't need to. The storytellers are (with two exceptions) people whose livelihoods came from using animals.

The marketing of an operation of breeding and slaughtering sentient nonhumans as a family farm (here, Bell straddles the line) is supposed to trigger some kind of compassion for the humans. I finally read SPECIESISM , by Joan Dunayer, which was published a couple of years after ANIMAL EQUALITY , which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago. My self-appointed job in this blog is to think critically about how our human lives intersect with those of sentient nonhumans, in action and thought. His passion and compassion for humans is immense, but he appears to have some kind of mental block with nonhuman animals. The result is that on one level he knows that hurting sentient nonhumans isn't right, but if it's done in a certain respectful way (oxymoron, anyone?) it's not so bad. I'm not sure how that equals soul.

Here's the good news: This is a very readable explanation of how animals in the Hundred Heartbeat Club (there are 100 or fewer individuals in the wild today) got to be in the club. Their claim is that what has become the customary way to take sentient nonhumans from babyhood to untimely death is not humane. It's impersonal and hideously ugly and the animals suffer greatly.
