Potpourri of Amazing Bird Science

10,000 Birds

The potpourri covers some interesting bird related science of the last few weeks, and the promise is this: I’ll get to that other stuff soon, I promise! They feed on animal plankton and build their nests by burrowing in the dirt on offshore islands. You see, it is all connected. But I didn’t get to that either.

Christian Science Monitor Calls for Endangered Species Hour

Critter News

I like this opinion piece from the Christian Science Monitor which calls for an "Endangered Species Hour." It's in response to the pathetic CITES conference which basically screwed marine animal protection. Tags: CITES marine animals Japan endangered species. They have a lot of spare time as their fishing technique is very efficient. Somehow, for this bird it is ok. They also look fairly cute.

On the threshold of flight

10,000 Birds

Flight has evolved multiple times; it has emerged in lizards, snakes, fish, bats, maybe bats again, distant relatives of primates, regular primates, rodents, and a few other unlikely taxa, in a rather half baked fashion, not “true” flight. It has evolved in non-vertebrate animals like insects more than once. Varricchio.
