Bird Litigation: Sonoran Desert Bald Eagle

Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit recently decided that the Sonoran Desert population of Bald Eagle is not a listable taxon under the Endangered Species Act. The Bald Eagle is one of the true American conservation success stories: the iconic national bird was listed in 1967 when there were less than 500 breeding pairs in the lower 48.

Upside-down January

I observed White-tailed Eagles likely a few thousand times, and this didn’t strike me as the dark young bird. The next option would be a very dark adult Greater Spotted Eagle … but I wasn’t ready! Trusting my instinct that in this kind of weather I can easily show this animal, a few days later I came back with a TV crew and… bingo!

The Reva Situation

Driving slowly along the track towards the levee separating this area from the Danube backwaters, a largish marten-like animal once ran across the track. Once I observed a man walking his two small dogs here, passing by a perched White-tailed Eagle but looking down at grass and not noticing the largest raptor in Europe at all.

Many of our native animals are looking for a place that is higher than the water level. Pheasant Coucal The White-bellied Sea-Eagles have bred nearby and can be observed soaring across the sky and the Australian White Ibis do like to look down on all of us on the wet ground from the streetlights.

They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ). A Crested Serpent Eagle , looking a bit ridiculous after a rain. Another “maybe this is” species: a possible Wallaces Hawk-eagle.
