It was not a kitty cat, even though all of its relatives in the Americas were. But they don’t live in North America. I find it astonishing that people argue of whether feral cats are bad for birds in North America. And for rodents and reptiles as well. The most interesting thing about this cat was lack of kitty-cat-ness.

The point is, the field guide I grabbed without hesitation was the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, 7th Edition by Jon L. North America is defined as from north of the Mexican border to the far north, plus “adjacent islands and seas within 200 nautical miles off the coast or offshore islands.”

Being a westerner — raised in California, and now living in western Mexico — I was perhaps most excited about the migratory birds that breed in eastern North America. The reptiles in Parque Tomás Garrido were of the crocodilian variety. Then, around 4:00 p.m., I liked their attitude. Some were quite large.

Turtles are the reptile everybody loves. It’s useful to remember the names of the two suborders of Testudines (the reptile order that includes all turtles): Cryptodira (turtles that retract their heads vertically and sea turtles–most of the turtles in the world) and Pleurodirans (turtles that retract their heads sideways).

The Salvia mexicana is sold in North America with the varietal name “Limelight” But this one was wild, native, and beautiful. While not my quite my first sighting of an Olive-sided Flycatcher for 2020, this difficult species is always a welcome find as it makes it way through Mexico to reach Central and South America.

And what does it tell us, other than the obvious “head for South America” or perhaps Indonesia? This portal has compared on a per unit of area basis data on the percentage of a total global number of species of birds, amphibians, mammals, reptiles, fish and vascular plants, creating a biodiversity index.

The relevant numbers involving cats, the people that cherish them, and the birds (and small mammals and reptiles) that they kill are all too large to mean much; you might as well use the funny word “gazillions.” Arriving in North America around the time of Columbus, they have become “one of the most successful invasive species on earth.”.
