And, I started daydreaming about encountering something a little different, maybe a Horned Frog, Ceratophrys cornuta, a large, squat green and brown frog of South America, with a wide mouth large enough to eat other frogs as well as reptiles. I have been a fan of the Kaufman Guides since I bought the Field Guide to Butterflies of North America , for a birds and butterflies trip to Colorado. Size is indicated as much as possible throughout the book, with measurements are given for birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

But I do have rules about whether I can have said to have visited a country, ie does the country “count” which I have inherited from my family, particularly my Dad. But you haven’t come here to read my writing about mammals or reptiles, so, yeah, there are also lots of birds. Red Lechwe.

Turtles are the reptile everybody loves. I happen to be particularly fond of turtles because my family has taken care of a small box turtle for 30 years (beware–turtles are extremely low-maintenance pets but will outlast your child’s youth and probably your life). You’re planning to take the whole family to Disneyland. Dogs, cats, birds (given there is no avian bird flu alert), rabbits and non-venomous reptiles are allowed. Other options outside the Disneyland Resort are Animals Friends Pet Hotel and Animal Inns of America. Everything is all set. At Disneyland, you can! That’s right!

I don’t mind that they share the world with other creatures, and I have even developed an appreciation for mammals, reptiles and amphibians – but only so long as watching them doesn’t collide with my finding birds. I definitely recommend it to naturalists in North America and East Asia as well. Lars-Henrik Olsen.
