In the non-breeding season, male Baya Weavers sometimes enter the basket-making trade, often with considerable success. Meanwhile, the females seem to have a much more relaxing life, at least in this early stage of the breeding season. In North America, everyone recognizes hawks on the wing, even the ones that aren’t Red-tailed Hawks. Even outside of Atlanta , Peregrine Falcons spend their breeding seasons smiling for the ( web ) camera from atop edifices all across the country. Don’t think that this event is only open to North American birders.

If this was America, we might not be concerned because starlings are an invasive species, at least in North America. The golden-winged warblers had just returned from South America to their breeding grounds in the mountains of Tennessee in 2013 when a massive storm was edging closer.

Then there is the fact that indicus sparrows tend to avoid human habitations while domesticus doesn’t, leading to sympatric breeding with a disputed amount of hybridisation.

In my brief time birding Michoacán, I believe I can claim at least four such events: 1st Northern Parula in Michoacán. They breed in northernmost Canada and Alaska, and winter in Patagonia in southernmost South America. The year was 2013, and I was just rediscovering a passion for birds after a 30-year hiatus.

Combined with New Zealand’s isolation this means there are not the strong seasonal shifts in birdlife here that you’d find in an equivalent area in North America or Europe. Only two of New Zealand’s landbirds are strongly migratory, both of them cuckoos. A third species, the Welcome Swallow , is apparently partly migratory.

A lovely looking and distinctive sounding bird (so they say, I sadly have not seen one…yet), the Kirtland’s Warbler can only be found during its breeding season in Jack Pine forests 5 to 20 years old in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. It was the end of prescribed burns as part of the Kirtland’s Warbler recovery plan.
