A new paper out this month attempts to paint the most comprehensive picture yet of the origins and diversification of the American sparrows, wood-warblers, blackbirds, cardinals, tanagers, and their kin, an enormous group of birds more than 800 species strong. We now know a lot more about who is a tanager vs. a sparrow vs. a cardinal.

Savannah Sparrows on Breeding Territory

Savannah Sparrows have been very kind to me over the last couple of years, whether at Brigantine , Breezy Point , or Lake Perris. Savannah Sparrows breed across the northern United States and most of Canada and Alaska and winter as far south as northern Central America and Cuba.

Jumping out of my “Beat” today

I am actually jumping out of my assigned beat area, to share some photos from my trip to Kodiak Island Alaska. Gold-crowned Sparrows were found around many of the salmon filled streams. I am sure there is a regulation that requires any article that covers Alaska, must include a Bald Eagle , so here is mine. Savanah Sparrow.

In July 2011 a Henslow’s Sparrow was found in Ames, N.Y., I’m not quite sure where I was at the time, probably working, and it was six more years till I got my state Henslow’s Sparrow at Shawangunk NWR (a shorter drive and a more cooperative bird). a rural area in the eastern-central part of the state.

However (also according to the HBW), Common Redpolls in Alaska are able to survive at temperatures of “only” -54°C compared with -67°C in Hoary Redpolls. Eurasian Tree Sparrows frequently find themselves out in the wild without a glass to drink from. At least such a statement will not offend the species, I guess.
