You see, the Great (White) Heron/Egret is a polytypic species with four subspecies: alba in Europe, egretta in the Americas, melanorhynchos in Africa, and modesta in Asia and Oceania. But we’re far from done with the confusion.

The dry regions in the southern extent of the studied zone is greater in North America, but the more southerly, outside the study area dry zone is huge in Europe compared to the North America study (North Africa vs. Mexico).

I guess most scientists would love to see their original research become the basis for a vast field of further studies. In terms of breeding behavior, starlings are a diversified group – some use helpers, others do not.

In southern Africa, there are two species. The Spotted Thick-knee , Burhinus capensis is, is found across much of Africa, favouring open country and is perfectly suited to the dry sandy ground of the cape region, where this individual would almost certainly have been overlooked were it not for its bright yellow legs, eyes and bill.

Given the complexity of the research, the result feels like a bit of a letdown – “northern populations start migration earlier than southern populations, especially in autumn” The species name of the Chestnut-eared Bunting is fucata , from the Latin “fucare”, to paint red.
