The urban decay means that many buildings are abandoned and boarded up, streets are so poorly maintained that potholes large enough to swallow a car are everywhere, and it is not the most unusual situation, as I learned, to be offered heroin. So we have a brown, slender-billed bird in font of us which we now know is a brown warbler, either of the genus Acrocephalus or Locustella. This is a Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus) and not a brown bird. This group is so incredibly easy that even I have decided to elaborate on their identification in this post. What is next?

Like many others, this village was totally abandoned and only recently repopulated, with a current population of only 18 people. House Sparrow – Passer domesticus. Tree Sparrow – Passer montanus. Chaffinch – Fringilla coelebs. Goldfinch – Carduelis carduelis. Linnet – Carduelis cannabina.

The series of birding workshops and meetings continued across the map, through Ulcinj, Montenegro, then Samobor, Croatia and Stip (described here ), North Macedonia, leading to Brussels, the unofficial capital of EU. The road was new, the only sign of the recent times were bullet holes in a few abandoned houses, but that was a rare sight.

They are clinging birds and use the technique on branches and tree trunks. Chickadees, woodpeckers, titmice (like the bird above) and nuthatches are considered “clinging type birds&# and can easily hang upside-down to get access to food. Gradually add and increase the amount of safflower in your bird feeder.

Old cars, antique gas pumps, and neon lit motels, were just up Jeanne’s photographic alley, and Lake Tucumcari was sure to be a birding hot spot for me. Unfortunately, the lake was the victim of several years of draught, but the grassy areas held a few nice birds, and there were a few surprises along the way. This was a first!

We did however gain an extra night, at our expense in Miami, Florida, all of which was in the dark, so I could not even run out and put a couple of birds on a Florida State List. So, in a simple version of the world of a bird, there are two sexes, male and female, and males chose females and females chose males as mates. They form and have lots of genes on them, but over time, all the non sex-related genes abandon the chromosome. And this brings us to Zonotrichia albicollis , the White-Throated Sparrow.

I guess that is only fair – after all this is the Christmas Bird Count that we all do, not the 4th of July Bird Count!
