The White-backed Woodpecker is the hardest resident woodpecker to find in Europe. So how did I manage to lay eyes on the most difficult-to-see European woodpecker? Chickadees, woodpeckers, titmice (like the bird above) and nuthatches are considered “clinging type birds&# and can easily hang upside-down to get access to food. Here’s a Red-bellied Woodpecker on an upside down suet feeder made of recycled plastic. They are clinging birds and use the technique on branches and tree trunks.

The United States built Fort Jefferson on Garden Key between 1846 to 1875 to protect its interests in the Gulf of Mexico, but was later abandoned without ever being fully completed. O’Sullivan informs us that a fertile egg is finally produced (not clear if it’s from The Stud or the other male, the Bronx Zoo only has two males) and abandoned and successfully nurtured by a pair of Ring-necked Doves. I would dearly love to see an Ivory-billed Woodpecker, and I think our Carrie deserves to observe a Great Auk.

It’s often considered wasteful that so many nests are abandoned and left to degenerate, but my theory of one of the reasons for this behavior is related to predation. Some of the malimbes forage in nuthatch or woodpecker fashion along trunks and branches of rainforest trees and they are frequent members of bird parties.
