There I learned, among a plethora of other fascinating facts, that Aristotle also divided the avian world in three: land birds (pigeons!) water birds (ducks!) There’s no way around it as the various species are reasonably common, and you will surely want to identify them. So we have a brown, slender-billed bird in font of us which we now know is a brown warbler, either of the genus Acrocephalus or Locustella. This is a Willow Warbler (Phylloscopus trochilus) and not a brown bird.

Old cars, antique gas pumps, and neon lit motels, were just up Jeanne’s photographic alley, and Lake Tucumcari was sure to be a birding hot spot for me. Unfortunately, the lake was the victim of several years of draught, but the grassy areas held a few nice birds, and there were a few surprises along the way. This was a first!

They are clinging birds and use the technique on branches and tree trunks. Chickadees, woodpeckers, titmice (like the bird above) and nuthatches are considered “clinging type birds&# and can easily hang upside-down to get access to food. Gradually add and increase the amount of safflower in your bird feeder.

So, in a simple version of the world of a bird, there are two sexes, male and female, and males chose females and females chose males as mates. They form and have lots of genes on them, but over time, all the non sex-related genes abandon the chromosome. And this brings us to Zonotrichia albicollis , the White-Throated Sparrow.

That is, no one had notified the weather until this past Sunday, the day of the Queens County Christmas Bird Count. I guess that is only fair – after all this is the Christmas Bird Count that we all do, not the 4th of July Bird Count! What was worrisome, though, was a lack of ducks. There were no shorebirds either.
