Broome’s tide chart for 2017 is here. It was hunting season and the men appeared to be mostly targeting the Eurasian Wigeon. Of course tides are important anywhere along a coastline and this past week has flown by, but we have been walking our beaches and bush-walking inland and topping up the 2017 Year List around Broome!

The Conservation section is frustratingly brief, stating the expected—massive loss of forest due to logging and a plantation economy, weak enforcement of laws regulating hunting and trade, understaffing of reserves and parks. It’s an odd effect, and doesn’t appear on the other seabird plates.

Brown Falcons , a Brown Goshawk, Wedge-tailed Eagles and also a Nankeen Kestrel hunted in the general area of the pool and were seen regularly during the day. We also added a few birds to my 2017 Year List. Whistling Kite nest near the top of the tallest tree. Whistling Kite at the nest.

Flock Bronzewings were in the hundreds through this area and Nankeen Kestrels hunted small prey through the grass. My 2017 Year List was increased from 256 to 311 and I will let you know a lot more about the birds across this region of northern Australia in weeks to come! Australian Bustard.

John James Audubon first heard the sparrow in July, 1944, on a buffalo hunt in North Dakota. So, I was excited to read reports in late 2017 of a pair of Whooping Cranes being seen on a cattle farm. Baird’s Sparrows are true prairie birds, and their population is declining as their grassland habitat is cultivated for agriculture.

I am a city girl and until I became a birder my contact with hunting was limited to occasionally seeing dead deer on the tops of cars in upstate New York. So–not a fan of hunting. I was really taken aback when I saw this.
