The main attraction for birders here are the hornbills – I have written about them before , so this post will be more on the other birds I saw there in 2017. The photos of Sultan Tit that I got at Hongbenghe in 2017 were much better than the ones I got on Hainan in 2022. Birds should be free. A worrying trend.

Broome’s tide chart for 2017 is here. It was hunting season and the men appeared to be mostly targeting the Eurasian Wigeon. At the car-park there is a trail that many of the hunters use and also birders, but it is risky! Common Eider were visibly feeding as the water dropped back from the causeway.

Hunting: You may have noticed that the Written Species Accounts include a section on hunting. I am a city girl and until I became a birder my contact with hunting was limited to occasionally seeing dead deer on the tops of cars in upstate New York. So–not a fan of hunting. I was really taken aback when I saw this.
