I was at the Blue Heron Wetlands in Titusville, Florida, during the Space Coast Birding and Wildlife Festival hoping to connect with a Purple Gallinule that the field trip I co-led with Laura Erickson failed to find. Yeah, if he would count Muscovy Duck in Florida it must be alright, right? And, sure enough, he did.

We see a closer shot of the river itself, hawks flying across the span, and then we see that brown line again, close up, a wall of brown panels filling the right side of the screen, continuing into the distance, no end in sight, while a white pick-up truck drives parallel to it at the far left of the screen.

They are choosing specific locations with willow trees located right by the water.

Story background: On June 8, 2012, SeaWorld’s Animal Rescue team traveled to Sykes Creek in Merritt Island, Fla. She had severe injuries to her front right flipper caused by a crab pot line. After assessment, her front right flipper was amputated and bandaged. So far in 2012, SeaWorld Orlando has rescued 12 manatees.

Several artificial waterholes that have been placed along these riverbeds are a magnet for wildlife and Leeudril is one such location. At 8am on Tuesday 30th August 2012, we arrived at Leeudril after leaving nearby Tweerivieren camp and were thrilled to spot a young female Leopard next to the water tank.

The 2012 event was held at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The spot to view the sparrows and pipit is right on a beaver dam surrounded by mud, it’s pretty cool. There are worse ways to spend an hour than by standing on a beaver dam.

And asking yourself the right question is more than half the way towards the answer. Large windows and unobstructed views of the river are a criterion for the right observation point. Their mortality was huge, but I realised how huge only when we did the December 2012 census to find only 1300 PCs. Four fifths were gone!

Jake lives in southern Florida, so he and his friends had to be interested in learning about these birds, which they saw everyday, right? The boys knew what Owls looked like, they saw Screech Owls (and Barred and Great Horned Owls) at a local wildlife park, and we photographed Burrowing Owl families every year at Brian Piccolo Park.

That is a big difference compared to the 2,000+ singing males detected in 2012, well above the recovery goal for this species set by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. On the short list of wins for wildlife during the Bush II era, Short-tailed Albatross were officially listed as Endangered in 2000. Somebody won a Nobel Prize.

You soon adapt to the early mornings and early nights to coincide with the wildlife! We did have the good fortune of finding an individually marked Bar-tailed Godwit that was marked in Yalu Jiang Nature Reserve in China last April 15th and was last seen there on May 11th 2012.
