The Eurasian Wryneck is the woodpecker that doesn’t look like a woodpecker, the bird with the portmanteau name that is also a medical condition (and which may remind some people of a Nora Ephron essay). They are slim and small-headed birds and their bills are fine, not strong and dynamic. This is a very easy book to read.

My best birds of the weekend were a bevy of Eastern Bluebirds in adult azure and immature mottled brown, beauteous birds any time of year. Having fun?

Corey’s best bird of the weekend was a male Long-tailed Duck in breeding plumage off the coast of Queens. I took Ivy to feed the birds up at Irondequoit Bay and observed this small goose. Fortunately, I didn’t have to go far to see my best birds of the weekend. By their unexpected numbers and activity, I wouldn’t be surprised if they we’re planning on breeding here. Corey’s best bird of the weekend was a Grasshopper Sparrow in Queens, his first ever in his (adopted) home borough.

My latest addition, a Parasitic Jaeger off the coast, finally got me to my 289th bird, well over a year since I got my 279th. The first time I did this I accidentally added twelve birds to my list before reviewing it.

Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. And, the birds are awesome. Ringer Anhingas and darters , cormorants and shags , frigatebirds , gannets and boobies , pelicans , and the tropicbirds all share a characteristic found in no other living bird: Their feet are totipalmate.

The volume and variety of wood-warblers that are regularly seen in spring migration there rival or best anywhere else in the world that the birds are seen. No, in fall there are less birds, mostly those caught out over the lake as dawn broke. Wood-warblers drip from the trees, feed on the boardwalk, and sing at close range.

Melanerpes lewis is, to put it simply, a really cool bird. Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. In fact, the bird is the fifth recorded in the history of the state,* and the first spotted in the Empire State since 2001. What a bird! Really well.

Tropical Cyclone Joyce dumped 100mm of rain in Perth as it travelled south as a rain-bearing depression and the whole family had the experience of torrential rain in Western Australia.
