Then rumors leaked out that at this same site the mythical Red Owl could easily be seen, Madagascar Serpent Eagle was breeding and other rare birds and lemurs abounded.

The early threats of guano harvesting and egg collecting have been replaced by the more ominous threats of oil pollution and overfishing of their favorite food source – pilchards. From 1978 to 2008 the Namibian population declined from 12,162 pairs to 4,563 pairs. In 2009 the population was recorded as 20,699 pairs.
