If I had a dollar for every time I had to explain why Melanerpes carolinus is named Red-bellied Woodpecker , I’d be able to afford little brochures on the topic to pass out in the field. Some, like the Oleaginous Hemispingus , suffer all three flaws. fuligula is most definitely a Tufted Duck.

While crossing Gramos Mountain in northern Greece, a Dendrocopos woodpecker flew over the road and landed in a pine tree. I had two possibilities, an uncommon Middle Spotted or scarce White-backed Woodpecker – which would have been a lifer for me. One Grey-headed Woodpecker flies across the road – a promising start.

Do birds suffer from depression? Also cute: Rufous Woodpecker. This Red-whiskered Bulbul looks like it might. Maybe it will get better once the rain stops and the sun comes out again. This Light-vented Bulbul seems to be coping a bit better. I know these two photos of a Slaty-backed Forktail are very similar.

The Speckled Piculet is a budget version of a woodpecker, measuring only about 9 to 10.5 eBird describes the Speckled Piculet as a “tiny” woodpecker while Marco Rubio once stated that Donald Trump has “small hands” The photo below presumably shows a male bird given its rufous-orange to yellow forehead.
