Birding the Drakensberg, South Africa

10,000 Birds

One in November 2018 included a one-day birding trip in the Drakensberg area, a mountain range in the border area between South Africa and Lesotho. For some reason that is hard for me to fathom, there is no such bird as a Cape Woodpecker. But of course, it is also nice to remember past birding trips. Nice not to be a kid, too.

Not enough Woodpeckers

10,000 Birds

It is hard to imagine any birder not liking woodpeckers – they are the “motherhood and apple pie” of the avian world. The Bearded Woodpecker (Mkuze, South Africa) does not really look any more bearded than many other woodpeckers. It is the most widespread woodpecker in Africa, claims the HBW.

Stamps in a Weathered Passport

10,000 Birds

With the lack of trees, it was a surprise that a woodpecker is still taking up space. In one stretch of rocky outcropping, a group of Ground Woodpeckers foraged along boulders searching for ants and as their name suggests, they forage on the ground in sparsely vegetated country.

Wagbachniederung & Saalbachniederung

10,000 Birds

Although an attractive bird, this species was not of particular interest to me as I’ve seen it countless times when I lived in South Africa (and is not present there at this time of year anyway), but the area has much more on offer. A Grey-headed Woodpecker called from a clump of trees that also held a Mistle Thrush.
