Other stops revealed more Red-eyed Vireos, additional Scarlet Tanagers, and a few Summer Tanagers but the biggest movements of birds took place right on the coast. The same goes for Panama, Nicaragua, Honduras, and other places along their migration routes. Yeah, I daresay those birds do pass through Costa Rica in the millions.

The first can be found from Mexico to Panama, while the second is endemic over a fairly large part of eastern Mexico. I live right in the middle of this species’ range, and have seen it ten times so far. Both are marsh-dwelling species. But the remaining Yellowthroat species, all marsh-dwellers, live in extremely small ranges.

To be honest, quetzals aren’t seen that often right at Myriam’s but they are seen just down the road. Quetzal is THE beloved, sacred bird of Guatemala and they do live there (and in southern Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama) BUT are more accessible in Costa Rica. Myriam’s Quetzales ! Are they her’s?

Costa Rica is situated right between two oceans. The pair of seas are close enough for the occasional adventurous frigatebird to just soar way up and right over to the other salty basin. But, if you want to go further afield, fear not, there is some wonderful lowland forest birding up near Nicaragua and down south by Panama as well.

There was a Gartered Trogon right above me, and one cooperative Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth on a cecropia tree, raising its head to smile at us. A group (maybe 4-5 ex.) of Panamanian White-faced Capuchins greeted us, before they decided to vacate the premises.

Solitary, naturally sparse, and stealthy, these deadly mini-stalkers are rarely seen and can catch and escape with a tanager right under your birding nose (once, while birding with 10 people, I was the only person who saw one fly off with a tanager). An adult Tiny Hawk from another day and place.

The Buff-throated Foliage-gleaner was finally split into at least two species, the ones that live in southern Costa Rica and adjacent Panama now being known as “ Chiriqui Foliage-gleaner “ Plain Wren wasn’t so plain after all. In Costa Rica, a lot of those birds fly right overhead. If the wind carries them on, maybe they will go to Panama, or even make it to Colombia. No sparrows or migrant juncos nor hardly any Yellow-rumpeds and forget about Orange-crowned (a serious mega around here!) An Eastern Kingbird on its way to the Amazon.

Bird the right places on the coast during April or October and you can see a constant, crazy stream of Chimney Swifts and swallows, flock after flock of Eastern Kingbirds and Scarlet Tanagers , a river of raptors, and maybe a vagrant wood-warbler, vireo, or flycatcher. My year Chestnut-colored Woodpecker gave some ridiculously nice looks.

Irazu being on volcanic hiatus is a comforting thought because I can see the big lump of mass right there out the bedroom window. I can’t say the same for its neighbor- crazy, ash-blowing, active Turrialba, but at least Irazu isn’t joining in with the volcanic chaos. One of those is the lovely Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher.

Although the proposal failed to pass, more than one person who voted on it mentioned that Howell was probably right but that a more thorough study was needed. The subspecies that occurs in Costa Rica is only found in middle-elevation forests in Costa Rica and Panama and lacks the white line behind the eye shown by South American birds.

Get onto a mixed flock and most won’ be found anywhere other than the mountains of Costa Rica and western Panama. Guests who don’t feel like walking up the road can enjoy many a bird right from the lodge including Violet Sabrewing and other hummingbirds, and various other fun species, often, all day long. In addition to the Violet Saberwing , just as we were leaveing the lodge, this Scintillant Hummingbird landed right next to the door way. The stay De Silva Biological Station, while well worth it, was a little bit more than we wanted to budget for, so the next best thing was staying right next door.

Mountains beckon just north of the airport and that’s where we ventured for a host of hummingbirds, Furnarids, wood-warblers, and other species, many of which only occur in the highlands of Costa Rica and Panama. If a birder in Costa Rica plays the birding cards right, heck, he or she might even hit 300 in a day.

The beautiful Buff-fronted Quail-Dove is not rare but you still have to go to the right places to see it. Most, like the Black-thighed Grosbeak, are also endemic to Costa Rica and Panama. Not all bird survey news is bad, though, because several species did seem to be just as common as past years.

Since the male Snowcap only occurs in foothill rainforests from Honduras to western Panama, is pretty uncommon (or at least often hard to see), and has deep wine reddish plumage with a glowing white crown, it can’t help but be a perpetual good bird. Snowcap = Glass of Burgundy X Nonpareil candy.

We ran across this Common Back Hawk right alongside the mangrove swamp. After hours of tromping thru the muck of a mangrove swamp, we found this Gartered Trogon on the wire right above the car.
