At dawn, my feet hit one of the protected beaches with Wendy Allen, the manager of the North Inlet-Winyah Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, one of the science and outreach organizations working within Hobcaw. No, we didn’t find any new turtle tracks, but we did record 18 bird species. hours of walking.

Our northern winters and highly developed landscape make New York City inhospitable to most species of lizard and it is no surprise that the two species that do occur in the Big Apple have their strongholds in the outer boroughs.* The range of the species extends as far south as Florida and as far west as Mexico and Texas.

My goal was Lucifer Hummingbird , but I didn’t do enough research to know that the best time to see the hummingbird is in the early evening. I had two days in the Ramsey Canyon area, and I focused on life birds. I was the only birder there!

I was on New Jersey Audubon’s Grand North Dakota birding tour this past July, driving along dirt roads through the prairies of western North Dakota. I wanted to see prairie birds and I wanted to experience a new state. I love sparrows, so seeing a feather-worn Vesper Sparrow this past July filled my heart with joy.
