Great Kiskadees , White-winged Doves , and, above all, Great-tailed Grackles were the species that couldn’t be missed. At the beach there were non stop Magnificent Frigatebirds overhead, Sandwich Terns and Royal Terns working the waves, and Brown Pelicans dropping in regularly. Not a bad mammal list for a weekend at a resort.

Add those life mammals to the life birds I already expected to see, and I was practically vibrating with excitement. The road was lined with scrub and short trees, and I spotted not one but two new sparrow species. We all boarded the bus, cameras and binoculars ready. Migrating Gray Whales. By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air! The next morning is for the Kerkini Lake, one of the youngest national parks of Greece, protected only ten years ago, in 2006 and inhabited by 11 amphibian, 27 reptilian, 44 mammal and 312 bird species.

Targets acquired, we piled into cars and headed south to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuges, the jewel of the Outer Banks, where we were likely to cross paths with the vast majority of our species for the day. Cruises are available to go out and spot them, and we took one and after twenty five years of trying to see one of these odd sea mammals we finally did, and actually saw a mother and calf to boot! They are one of the smaller species of Bottlenoses (I can’t pretend to understand dolphin taxonomy). Mother and calf Dugongs!

Despite the golf course, this place host all manner of birds and mammals. In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site. Thus, I arrived in Panama with 204 species on my country list and low expectations for more than a handful of lifers.

I am a migration junky. I also love large congregations of birds. Even the brown birds are fun like this Crested Lark.
