Add those life mammals to the life birds I already expected to see, and I was practically vibrating with excitement. A lone Brown-Pelican was dive-bombing for fish, while a Red-throated Loon slipped beneath the waves and added another life bird to my list. We all boarded the bus, cameras and binoculars ready. At the beach there were non stop Magnificent Frigatebirds overhead, Sandwich Terns and Royal Terns working the waves, and Brown Pelicans dropping in regularly. Not a bad mammal list for a weekend at a resort. Great Kiskadees , White-winged Doves , and, above all, Great-tailed Grackles were the species that couldn’t be missed.

The next morning is for the Kerkini Lake, one of the youngest national parks of Greece, protected only ten years ago, in 2006 and inhabited by 11 amphibian, 27 reptilian, 44 mammal and 312 bird species. Among them are Dalmatian Pelicans , so big and lazy. I opt for the bird richest section of the lake, visible from the eastern dyke.

Cruises are available to go out and spot them, and we took one and after twenty five years of trying to see one of these odd sea mammals we finally did, and actually saw a mother and calf to boot! Osprey, Australian Pelicans and Pacific Gulls also patrolled the waters. and Red-capped Plovers. The scrub is pretty too.

Despite the golf course, this place host all manner of birds and mammals. In fact, we saw two species of monkey, our only sloths, lots of coatis, and my rarest ever mammal sighting—a Jaguarundi —right on site. Brown Pelican. But as far as habitat and biodiversity on the premises, Radisson Summit dramatically exceeded my hopes.
