At this end of the waters edge, quite a bit of livestock had had been in and out, leaving large footprints in the mud. This Common Ground Dove was the boldest of all, landing right at waters edge, and getting a hardy drink. The California Quail used a similar hoof print for their needs as well.

The combination of over hunting, and the native animals susceptibility to diseases carried by domestic livestock that were allowed to graze there, completely eliminated these Bighorns by 1915. This small group of Pronghorn Antelope were right at the refuge entrance. The population is now estimated to be at over 500.

We were able to spend hours sitting right in amongst super-groups of 500-600 Geladas that just carried on with their daily business in total oblivion to our presence. Competition with domestic livestock has restricted some Gelada bands to poorer foraging on steep slopes. They are however classified by IUCN as Least Concern.

Early morning is of course birding prime time and a pre-breakfast stroll around our lodge produced sightings of the lovely Orange-bellied Parrot , which we tracked down to a nesting hole right next to the restaurant. Splashes of color were added by cryptic Bruce’s Green Pigeons and more raucous Abyssinian and Lilac-breasted rollers.
