In one big wave the Black Skimmers and Least Terns arrived on the Panhandle, filling the skies with their unique calls and patrolling the bays and Gulf of Mexico for prey. As the sun set, whole groups took wing, flying low over the water and showing everyone how unique skimming feeding tactics earned them their name.

Ashy Storm-Petrel : Approximately 50% of the world’s Ashy Storm-Petrels breed on Farallones NWR , a group of rocky islands 30 miles from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Further west, other sanctuaries include additional protected waters, including the enormous 580,000 square mile Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument in Hawaii.

Their range of breeding is literally only very southern Wyoming to very northern New Mexico. Having said that, Colorado has done a wonderful job of protecting habitat and since this species breeds on super high cliffs there is no true threat to habitat destruction. Thus, Colorado encapsulates most of their breeding range.

Puerto Escondido is a small protected harbor that caters to transient boats, both fishing as well as sailboats. A good portion though is agricultural and so the chance for a new group of birds is there. Sunday Night, Super Bowl Sunday, and the day before a huge national holiday here in Mexico. February 2nd.
