The idea is to portray one bird for each hour of the day in words and art, presenting the diversity, beauty, and wonder of avian life. Hauber is really good at presenting scientific findings so they don’t seem scientific at all, simply reasonable answers to our questions. Bird Day is a lovely, little jewel of a book.

According to evidence presented at trial: “The agents found the carcasses of approximately 90 brown pelicans, 17 great blue herons, five great egrets, four black-crowned night herons, four turkey vultures, two osprey, two gulls and one scaup. ” Birds are protected and can’t be shot at will, even in Texas.

Established to protect a watershed and used for environmental education in the eastern Central Valley, Rio Loro has a few nice trails, picnic tables, and even has a small canopy tower (!). This cheerful little bird is very common in second growth and coffee farms of the Central Valley. Chestnut-capped Warbler.

In birding circles, Costa Rica is better known for protected areas, quetzal tours, and glittering displays of hummingbirds than the things that fly in urban spots. During migration, the songs of occasional warblers and a Great-crested Flycatcher or two would suddenly be present. That makes sense. In remnant riparian zones?

The path started at the parking area, moving to an overlook presenting a gorgeous viewshed of the marsh, rolling hills, and mountains beyond. The trail wove downhill, around farm buildings demonstrative of the agricultural history of the site before it became protected. Historic buildings at Elkhorn Slough.

Once he was a black child, and he grew up on a farm in Edgefield County, South Carolina, surrounded by protected woodlands and troubled human history. The love of nature is evident in his chapters about his parents and siblings; his family is ever-present in his musings on trees and springs and cows. Drew Lanham is a black man.

The estuary of this river had been populated by mangroves for centuries but most of it has been destroyed to give way to shrimp farming, luckily the local community of Puerto Portobelo became interested in the protection of the mangroves since they have been local fishermen who have benefited from the mangroves for many generations.
