This area did seem to be suffering quite a bit from the drought. One group that was mostly absent was the hummingbird family. So I will have to show you colorful birds from other families. It turns out they also winter in my state. My fourth outing for the year was to the area around La Escalera.

Among some other species of the kingfisher family, this species is a bit of a laughingstock. The babblers have a sentinel system – individual birds take turns scanning for predators and warning the group. While the park still suffers from an abundance of non-birds, at least some of them are already dead.

This is the home of the Rusty-naped Pitta , admittedly one of the less glamorous of the family, particularly the subspecies found in Yunnan, but still a nice sight and still a pitta. No doubt, the Lesser NLT will be relieved not to be bossed around by its erstwhile bigger family member anymore. ” ( source ).

Red-billed Curassow ( Crax blumenbachii ), a large, ground-dwelling bird belonging to the same family as the more familiar Plain Chachalaca of southern Texas, was never a very widespread species. Having a family of endangered Red-billed Curassow willingly approach me to within such a short distance is definitely one of them!

The Hyacinth Macaw is more than just another pretty face; these birds are social with strong family values. They like to fly in pairs or groups and in the evening they come together in big groups to roost in a favorite ‘dormitory’ tree. The Hyacinth Macaw doesn’t start a family until it is seven years old.

The English language, or at least the adherents thereof with more time on their hands than sense, has bestowed us a great number of names to collective nouns for groups of birds. This adult still has some brown on the neck, but fully developed wattles.

Parrots captivate me more than any other bird family. With their strong flight and capability to disperse, parrots have managed to colonize almost every major island group from Tahiti to Mauritius to Dominica. However, they do not occur evenly across their familial distribution. I am a self-proclaimed psittacophile.
