Snowcap and White-tipped Sicklebill – Choice hummingbirds in a speciose, fantastic family of birds. One of those occasions was by invitation from the San Vito Birding Club , a memorable experience I will cover in another blog post. We saw both of these beauties at known sites near the edge of Braulio Carrillo National Park.

Tom Dunkerton tipped me off to an area on the Black Merritt National Wildlife Refuge where some of my target birds can be seen. The Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival occurs every year at the end of January in Titusville. In my experience, however, most salt marsh species are seen like this.

I learned early and often when I moved to Colorado that a birder will have to up their physical ante to experience some of these birds. At which point, the Owl will lunge out at pluck the bird right off it’s perch. It wasn’t too hard as it seemed we parked our SUVs right on top of a pair’s territory.

Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend.
