In other words, millions of people got together with family and friends for a cozy day of mashed potatoes, gravy, apple pie, naps, football, and some serious turkeyliciousness. That last little bit is also why we call it “Turkey Day”! Our final turkey is a much-wanted bird on many a birder’s target list.

As such, it offers some unique birding experiences. Since I have limited experience with eastern Mexico, and even less experience with tropical species, I enthusiastically accepted. Much more surprising, however, is that freshwater snails are also the preferred food for a local member of the hawk family. Good choice!

I was so crippled with envy over Corey’s current Neotropical sojourn (with a few family commitments thrown in) that I could barely bring myself to look at birds at all. If you’ve blogged about your weekend experience, you should include a link in your comment. The attraction of that particular vantage remains unknown.

Most interesting is that one’s knowledge of important things like where to find food (or danger) was based on experience not on general principles. So an Efe off his trail, or another trail he knew about, was not much better than, say, me (after a couple of years gaining my own experience) at having a clue. So remember.

Large picnic pavilions border one side, and while I was there the largest was commandeered by a family party. Tricolored and Little Blue Herons provided diversity, while an Osprey and group of circling Turkey Vultures were the only shapes that broke the constant blue of the sky.
