The “Turkeys” of Costa Rica

In other words, millions of people got together with family and friends for a cozy day of mashed potatoes, gravy, apple pie, naps, football, and some serious turkeyliciousness. That last little bit is also why we call it “Turkey Day”! Thanksgiving was celebrated a couple of days ago across the USA. Ain’t I great?

As such, it offers some unique birding experiences. Since I have limited experience with eastern Mexico, and even less experience with tropical species, I enthusiastically accepted. By week’s end I had 30 new species on my life list. Because of this, many of the species we saw are water-loving species.

The disparity in species could be stark, for example if one were to bird on different sides of the planet. I don’t keep lists but one of my guests did and the final tally was 166 species.

And I have lots of experience with my long lens drawing attention. And it offered up another taxonomic family I had longed to meet, with my first bee-eater , an Arabian Green Bee-eater. I suspect that if I could have stood still for a bit, or even (gasp) wander away from the group, I could have seen many more species.
