On the drive I had picked up the flamboyant Red-collared and Long-tailed Widowbirds , extraordinary members of the weaver family who’s ridiculous tails make them easy to spot even from a moving car. Longclaws are African members of the pipit and wagtail family, and unlike the rest of the family they have gorgeously-coloured throats.

Sharks cruise off the city’s beaches, and just yesterday a deadly species of snake was found in a suburban railway station. These are the largest of the fruit-doves and quite beautiful and not a species I had ever seen before, so I was quite pleased. The family on a peaceful moment.

My family and I enjoyed the Corn Hill Festival this weekend, which is definitely one of Rochester’s better events. Either of the two was his Best Bird of the Weekend because when endangered species reproduce that is always the best! My best bird of the year is based on the sighting rather than the species. Obviously my best bird of the year is going to come during this trip, what with several species of endemic pitta and broadbill possible, not to mention 8 species of hornbill and numerous babblers, storks, kingfishers, trogons and even the endemic Bornean Bristlehead.

I saw Painted Wolves again, my favourite species ever. In particular they evoke the New Hampshire lake my extended family descends upon each summer and has done so from before I was born. The Orange-fronted Parakeet is a critically endangered species that I came agonisingly close to seeing but didn’t. A new duck!
