I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. It seems that this is another species for which the standard phrase of scientists anywhere, “more research needed”, applies.

In Florida, the Least Tern is a state-designated threatened species; the interior populations are federally endangered. It’s mid-April, and soon they will begin laying eggs. If they are on a leash our pets are less likely to damage a nest. Young Least Terns enjoying some shade. The terns I watched were clearly resting.

The adults of most species will still care for the chicks no matter how much you touch them. Sometimes females have eggs to lay but no nest and the eggs can end up anywhere from other duck and goose nests…there was even a case in Minnesota where a Canada Goose laid an egg in an Osprey nest and the raptors incubated and hatched it !

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family.
