Birding Iceland on the Fly

10,000 Birds

'Joseph Chiera is a Masters student in Animal Behavior and Conservation at Hunter College in NYC and a “somewhat newbie” to birding. After taking an ornithology course last year, he was hooked and spends most of his free time birding or reading birding blogs. Between finishing one graduate program and begining another, he embarked on a whirlwind tour of Europe.

The Warbler Duo of Florida’s Mangroves

10,000 Birds

'I always like to see the look of surprise on a visiting birder’s face when I tell them that the Prairie Warblers and Yellow Warblers in southern Florida are restricted to mangrove habitats. Although both species are widespread in North America as breeders in shrubby edge habitats, that is not the case in the southern half of the sunshine state (the more northerly race of Prairie Warbler is an uncommon breeder in the panhandle).

Birds Don’t Have Wings, And They Don’t Use Them

10,000 Birds

'Blue-gray Tanager is a bird reasonable to expect in the U.S. as a vagrant someday…they are common in many habitats in eastern Mexico. If and when one does show up in a feasible place, brace yourself for the coming “birds have wings” debate. Hello Birdosphere! The last couple of months I’ve used this space to talk about birds…but let’s face it, lots of birders out there are capable of discussing all things avian.

Sad End for Vagrant Swift, Happy Ending for Wrong-Way Pigeon

10,000 Birds

'Photo by Steve Duffield/ The Telegraph. Whither the wayward bird? Birders often delight in chasing rarities that suddenly appear hundreds or thousands of miles from where they should be. But sometimes, the bird would have been better off staying home. Take the case of the White-throated Needletail which recently popped up on the Isle of Harris in Scotland.

Midsummer’s Bird and Some Thoughts on Naming

10,000 Birds

'The Yellow Warbler is the first warbler I ever saw, and the most recent. It’s among a handful of species — American Robin, Black-capped Chickadee , the unholy trinity of House Sparrow – Rock Pigeon – European Starling , a few others — that have been everywhere I’ve ever lived. I’ve seen Yellow Warblers in the low shrubs of Western New York pastures, the river valleys of Missoula, and the trees of abandoned industrial sites in New York City.

Ringing in the new breeding season

10,000 Birds

'The Scots have left many legacies in the Arctic, from bannock to square dancing to accordians and jigging to a healthy contribution to the region’s DNA thanks to Whalers and Hudson’s Bay Co. men. As it turns out we can add their birds to that list. Conventional thinking for my region of the Arctic, the north end of Baffin Island is that the Red Knots that nest here come from the North (and South) American race of Calidris canutus, the rufa race.

Call for IATB: It’s time for Ibis!

10,000 Birds

'I’m moving the schedule of IATB around this month to work around some travel time for me, but it means that you’re all getting an EXTRA week to send me some stuff for July’s I and the Bird. The theme this time around will be Ibises (Ibii? Ibisses?), that bizarre and wonderful sickle-billed group of waders, and what the heck, I’ll allow their close cousins the Spoonbills as well being as they’re simply odd Ibises anyway.

White-headed Woodpeckers Nesting at Lassen Volcanic National Park

10,000 Birds

'As you enter Lassen Volcanic National Park’s northern entrance the first thing you see along the right side of the road is Manzanita Lake with Mount Lassen in the background. Mount Lassen from Manzanita Lake (click on photos for full sized images). A birding friend of mine listed nesting White-headed Woodpeckers ( Picoides albolarvatus ) on the local Shasta County listserve so I thought I’d head up to Lassen Park to check it out.

Where Are You Birding This First Weekend of July 2013?

10,000 Birds

'Is there anything quite like a long weekend to make one feel patriotic? Perhaps the two don’t go hand in hand in your mind, but many Americans relate the extended Independence Day weekend to a higher level of satisfaction and pride in country. I’m sure that denizens of other countries would agree that long weekends make happy citizens! I’m fortunate to be spending the weekend entertaining family, which means I’ll be enjoying birds at all the local tourist attractions!

Best Bird of the Weekend (Last of June 2013)

10,000 Birds

'Have you ever found yourself unable to pack properly for a trip because you can’t conceive of conditions dramatically different from the ones you were experiencing in the moment? What I mean here is the way the memory of desert heat becomes impossible to evoke in the depth of winter, or how that same bone-chilling cold is forgotten during a hot and muggy city summer.

Minyirr Park, Broome

'Broome is famous for its beautiful long beach, Cable Beach, which runs for approximately 23 kilometres from Gantheaume Point in the south to Willie Creek in the north. It is possible to walk or cycle this beach, but you need to be aware of the tide times for cycling as there is up to 10 metres of movement and the sand can become too soft to cycle on at high tide.

10,000 Birds

'It has been eight days since I came back from California on a red eye. Once we got back last Sunday Daisy and I cleaned the house while Desi played. Then, having not managed to sleep much at all while I was on the plane, I fell asleep for several hours. When I woke up, discombobulated and confused, I saw that I had a voicemail on my phone from Isaac Grant, a Staten Island birder doing a New York City big year.
