On SPECIESISM, by Joan Dunayer

Animal Person

I finally read SPECIESISM , by Joan Dunayer, which was published a couple of years after ANIMAL EQUALITY , which I wrote about a couple of weeks ago. This book has so many great quotes that I'm going to have to write a couple of posts about them. Off we go (and all of the below are exact quotes). Whenever the media report that someone has killed "an endangered animal" or "an endangered species," they too confuse an individual with a species.

From Today's New York Times

Animal Ethics

To the Editor: Re “ Animal Abuse as Clue to Additional Cruelties ” (news article, March 18): As someone who deals with dozens of cruelty-to-animals cases every week, I applaud states that are imposing stricter penalties on people who hurt animals and that are working to establish online registries of animal abusers. Animal abusers are cowards who take their issues out on “easy victims”—and their targets often include their fellow humans.

Are Published Animal Studies Skewed?

Critter News

Here's an article in Nature about how many animal studies with negative or inconclusive results go unpublished. It raises the question of how useful animal research really is if we only see the studies that show relevant results. What about the ones that are negative because animals are not really representative of human biology? Or negative for whatever other reasons?

Another Critical Article Directed at CITES

Critter News

The CITES irresponsible treatment of marine animals made it to Huffington Post too. This article is by the President of the Blue Frontier Campaign. I'm glad others share my disgust with CITES and the UN. Hopefully, regular citizens will read this and not just other activists. (I forwarded an article about this to my book club members. Knowing them, I bet they were hoping for fish and chips instead!).

British Veterinarians Have High Suicide Rate

Critter News

Very interesting, and surprising, story about why veterinarians in Britain appear to be four times as likely as the general public to commit suicide. The article summarizes the results of a research paper by a PhD student in mental health. While the research paper deals specifically with British veterinarians, there are apparently elevated suicide rates in this profession in other countries as well.

Christian Science Monitor Calls for Endangered Species Hour

Critter News

"Earth Hour" was held yesterday. People were supposed to turn their lights off for an hour. I like this opinion piece from the Christian Science Monitor which calls for an "Endangered Species Hour." It's in response to the pathetic CITES conference which basically screwed marine animal protection. The Christian Science Monitor rightly points out that citizens and consumers need to get involved in endangered species protection, because at the CITES level, it's all about money and international po
